The destination
Azerbaijan and Israel: a true friendship
Imagine a city where you can walk down the street wearing a kippah, hear Hebrew in the café and step into a Shabbat meal at the Chabad House — and feel at home. This is Baku. A Muslim country where Jews have lived openly and proudly for centuries, where Israel is regarded as a close friend, and where you are welcomed with a smile. Three hours’ flight from Tel Aviv, and a whole world of warmth, beauty and security.
Diplomatic relations and partnership
Azerbaijan and Israel have maintained diplomatic relations since 1992. Israel’s embassy has operated in Baku since 1993, and in 2023 Azerbaijan opened its embassy in Tel Aviv — the first Shia Muslim-majority country to do so. This is a long-standing strategic partnership, built on mutual trust and on economic and security cooperation.
Jewish life with pride
Azerbaijan has a long tradition of tolerance. Its Jewish community lives openly and with dignity, and in Baku there are synagogues serving the Mountain Jews, the Ashkenazi community and Jews of Georgian origin. The Chabad House in Baku, founded by Rabbi Shneor Segal and his wife in 2002, holds Shabbat meals, provides kosher food and warmly opens its doors to Jewish travellers. The atmosphere towards Jews and Israelis is friendly and respectful.
The Red Village of the Mountain Jews
In the north of the country, near the town of Quba, lies Qırmızı Qəsəbə — “the Red Village” — the centre of the Mountain Jews, regarded as the largest predominantly Jewish settlement of its kind outside Israel and the United States. Its synagogues are active to this day, among them the impressive six-domed synagogue built in 1888. A visit to the village is a moving encounter with a living, proud and deeply rooted Jewish community.
A beautiful city and good people
Baku is a beautiful, classic city: broad avenues, ornate European-style buildings and a green promenade along the Caspian Sea. And what stays with you is the people — warm, hospitable and generous.
Victory in Karabakh
In the 44-day war in autumn 2020, Azerbaijan regained control of seven districts and a considerable part of Karabakh, and in September 2023 it completed the restoration of its sovereignty over the entire region. Azerbaijan won, thanks in part to Israeli capabilities: according to SIPRI data, Israel supplied some 69% of Azerbaijan’s major arms imports in 2016–2020, and according to public reports, Israeli-made systems, including unmanned aerial vehicles, played an important role in the fighting.
Three hours from home
The direct flight from Tel Aviv to Baku takes about three hours, and several airlines operate direct flights on the route. A close, friendly and familiar destination — where you can feel among friends.
